FLINT family: James Flint was my great uncle. He was born in 1831. Married Mary Ann Burton in 1851 at St. Dunstan , Stepney. They had two children before their arrival. They settled in Papanui, Christchurch. They raised eight more children. James was a market gardener. Their voyage out to New Zealand was in no way boring. Some of this information was taken from a diary written by another passenger. 13th Aug 1858 met up with the "Aurora" from Portugal bound for Liverpool. 20th August- Women and Children were ordered to go on deck, beds and bedding and other item that may be moved, brought up to air, the men to muster below for a general clean out, scrubbing and scraping, after which Chloride of lime was strewed all over the place. 25th August - There was only two cooks on board who were cooking for approximately 400. The galley was five or six feet square, with two great fires going all day. It was resolved that every man on the ship should take his turn, two at a time to attend the galley, every night from 6 to 8pm. 18th October- In company of a large iceberg. The reason the Captain states for being so far south is to get the stronger winds. If you have a connection with this family or would like to know more please contact Michele Cook. |

James HERON James Heron (Heron was mistakenly spelt with double 'r' on ships list), was born in Killinchy, Co. Down, Ireland in 1837. He emmigrated to NZ in 1858 aboard this ship and landed at Lyttleton. He met his wife, Sarah Nevin in Christchurch where they were married on the 20th of November 1867 at St. Michaels. Sarah was born in 1845 in Portarlington, Queens County (now Co. Laois), Ireland. James and Sarah had 11 children of which I am a descendant and if you would like any, or have any, further information please E-Mail me, Tony Heron |
