Built on the Thames at London by
Duncan Dunbar in 1852, Northfleet, a frigate-built ship of 896 tons, gained some fame as a
fast sailer during the days of the China Trade. She seems to have continued this quality
into her Colonial sailing days. The largest merchant vessel to enter Wellington up until
1853 she surprised Wellington residents in the morning light of December 14th of that year
by arriving in the harbour 87 days out from London. On this voyage she brought out 300
passengers; 100 for Wellington and an equal number for Lyttelton (13/01/1854) and Auckland
(02/02/1854).

This was the maiden voyage of the Northfleet. Following this she entered the China trade.

| HALL family: John Hall had been working for the Coast Guard in Kent and Suffolk , England since 1838. The Hall family settled in Greytown, Wairarapa. Ann Maria married Luke Hobman and Robert married Henrietta Judd on 16 November 1868. For further information please contact Christine Pennell. |

| THOMAS PAPPRILL: THOMAS PAPPRILL (spelt Pepperill on this list) born Holborn, London 1834, solicitors' clerk. Travelled to Lyttelton on this voyage with sister Marianne (reference Papprill Family Bible). Jubliee Issue of "Weekly News" 1900 has a portrait of Thomas and reference to his arrival on this voyage. He and his brother JOSEPH WILLIAM ("Cornwall" 1851) were licensees of the Sawyers Arms, Papanui until c. 1860. Joseph moved to Rangiora Arms and Thomas became a solicitors clerk, Christchurch. Died 1904. Their parents Joseph and Marianne emigrated on the "Phillip Laing" 1856. Joseph was a tailor in Christchurch. His wife Marianne was born 1803 in Hamburg, daughter of Thomas Harbridge, English Teacher. Another son of Joseph Snr. was Silas - believed to have been on Phillip Laing voyage, although the Family Bible says "Northfleet". Silas developed a telephone system about the time Bell patented his (reference Post Office Archives). Papprill ancestry in London and Essex and descendants have been documented including some descendants of Silas who were went to Australia with their mother.
