WAR DEPARTMENT, Washington, April 23, 1862.

Hon. CHARLES B. CALVERT, House of Representatives.

SIR: I am directed by the Secretary of War to inform you in reply to your letter of the 21st instant that he has already ordered a full investigation of the circumstances attending the shooting of Jesse Wharton at the Old Capitol Prison, and that when the report of the officers intrusted with this duty shall have been submitted to this Department you will be promptly advised of the result of their inquiries.

I have the honor to be, very respectfully, your obedient servant,

P. H. WATSON, Assistant Secretary of War
[An archivist at the National Archives was kind enough to look for the report mentioned in the letter, but was unable to find it. Their letter to me, dated 21 January 2000, includes this paragraph:]

I did not find a report regarding this incident. A search in Record Group 107, Records of the Office of the Secretary of War, Register of Letters Received, Main Series, shows that the incident was referred to Brig. Gen. James Wadsworth. A further search for Wadsworth's report, however, proved negative. No references were located in RG 107, Record Group 94, Records of the Adjutant General's Office, and Record Group 108, Records of the Headquarters of the Army.
