John Thomas McCormick

Before the war

He was born in 1841/42 (3 (19 in 1861), 4 (19 in 1861), 5 (21 in 1863), 6 (47 in ?1893), 8 (47 in ?1893), 9 (47 in ?1893)). He was born in Baltimore, Maryland (4, 5, 6, 8, 9).

When he enlisted, he was a clerk, and was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3, 4, 5).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair (3 [5'5", blue eyes], 4 [5'5-1/2", grey eyes], 5 [5'5-1/2", grey eyes]).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 31 October 1861 (1, 3 [at Bealton VA!], 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Sinex (4). He was mustered in service by Lieutenant Diehl (4). He was a private in company D (1, 11-16).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863 (1, 3, 5). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Swan (5).

On 18 March 1864, he was released from arrest and restored to duty, but the pay for the time he were absent, transportation, and the reward authorized for deserters, along with the cost of any lost property were deducted from his pay (2).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 3). He had served for forty-five months (6, 8, 9). He was a private, in company D (11-16).

After the war

On 19 Jan 1891, he applied successfully from Maryland for a pension (7, 10).

On 13 April 1893, he was admitted to the National Soldiers Home (6, 8, 9). He was admitted from Maryland (6, 8, 9). He had rheumatism (6, 8).

In 1893, he was present in the Southern Branch of the National Soldiers Home (8). He was apparently not receiving a pension (8).

In 1898, he was present in the Central Branch (6). He was receiving a pension of $8 per month (6).

He died on 27 April 1899, in the Central Branch of the National Soldiers Home (9, 10). He was then receiving a pension of $8 per month (9). He had rheumatism (9).

On 8 May 1899, his widow, Regina A McCormick, applied successfully from Maryland for a pension (7, 10).
