91st PA: Matthew McIlvaney [or McElvaney]

Matthew McIlvaney [or McElvaney]

Before the war

He was born in 1816/17 (7 (44 in 1861)). He was born in Antrim, Ireland (7).

When he enlisted, he was a weav[er] (7).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 9-1/4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (7).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 5 November 1861 (1, 7). He was enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Casner (7). He was mustered in as a private in company K, by Lieutenant George Murphy (1, 7, 12-17).

He may have deserted on 25 August 1863, from a hospital in West Philadelphia--but the entry is crossed out in a way that suggests this is a mistake (5).

On 8 September 1863, Sinex reported that he was in Philadelphia and able to rejoin the regiment, and requested his return (2).

On 18 September 1863, he was reported deserted from a hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3). On 29 October 1863, he was reported regained from desertion (4).

He was transferred on 1 May 1864 to the Veterans' reserve corps (1, 6, 8 [reported 8 July]). When transferred, he was a private in company K (12-17). He served in company A or H of the 3rd Veterans' reserve corps (10 [A], 11 [H]).

Perhaps the Jane McIlvany (wife of Matthew McIlvany) who died on 24 May 1864, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was his wife (18).

After the war

On 24 March 1875, a minor dependent, Martha Gieher, applied unsuccessfully for a pension (9, 10, 11).
