He was apparently absent on leave from 5 March 1863 to 12 March 1863 (7). Because he did not return on time, he was counted as absent without leave on the 13th (8). But he returned on the 14th (6).
He fought in the battle of Gettysburg (5), and was wounded there in the hand on 3 July 1863 (1, 2).
He was transferred in October 1863 to the Veterans' Reserve Corp, because he was unfit for field duty (1, 2, 3). He was a private, in company E, when he was transferred (13, 14). He served in company F, 18th regiment (4, 12). The regiment reported his transfer on 29 June 1864 (10). He may have been discharged on 2 September 1864 (11).
On 28 December 1865, he applied successfully for a pension (4, 12).
In 1880, he was living at 1617 Sanderson Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his wife Ann, and his children John, Rebecca, and Kate (9).
In 1890, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11).
He died on 17 April 1891 (12).
On 5 May 1891, his widow, Ann McKain, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 12).
