Before the war

He was born in 1831, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: date: 5 (33 in 1861), 8 (33 in 1860), 9 (41 in 1870), 10 (51 in 1880), 13, 14 (21 in 1860), 15 (63 in June 92). place: 5, 8, 9, 10]

In 1850, he was probably living in the third ward, Northern Liberties, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was a waterman. [source: 14]

In 1850 or 1851, he married Isabella Phillips. She was the sister of George S Phillips, who also served in the 91st Pennsylvania. She had seven or eight children, four of whom were alive in 1900 and 1910. They include:

In 1860, he was living in the 19th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Isabella, and children Margaret and William. He was a shoemaker, and owned $150 in personal property. [source: 8]

He was a shoemaker when he enlisted. [source: 5]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair. [source: 5]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 18 November 1861. He was enlisted by C L Zinn, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a private in company H. He had rifle number 101. [sources: 1, 5, 7 (8 Nov), 19, 20]

He was discharged on 26 December 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability. He was a private, in company H. [sources: 1, 4, 5, 7 (Jan 63), 19, 20]

On 8 September 1863, Sinex reported that he was in Philadelphia and able to rejoin the regiment, and requested his return. [source: 2]

After the war

On 16 December 1864, the Philadelphia Orphans' Court appointed him guardian of his sister-in-law Emily Theresa Phillips, on security of $300. [source: 17]

In 1870, he was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Isabella, and children Margaret, William, and George. He was a shoemaker, and owned real property worth $3,000 and personal property worth $700. [source: 9]

He applied successfully for a pension on 24 June 1880. [sources: 3, 16]

In 1880, he was living at 1352 Ohio Street, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Isabella, and children William, George, and Mary. He was a shoemaker, but had been unemployed for twelve months in the previous year. [source: 10]

In 1890, he was living at 2223 Wrekin Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a shoemaker. He had an injury to his right side. [sources: 6, 7]

He died on 21 January 1893, of phthisis pulmonalis. He was then a shoemaker. He was married. He died at or was buried from 2535 Sepviva Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was buried on 25 January 1893, in the Cumberland M E Vault. [source: 15]

His widow, Isabella Amey, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension on 6 March 1896. [sources: 3, 16]

In 1900, his widow, Isabella Amey, was living at 1821 Somerset Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with her daughter Margaret and Margaret's family. [source: 11]

In 1910, his widow, Isabella Amey, was living at 1857 E Resno Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , with her daughter Margaret and Margaret's family. [source: 12]

On 26 July 1912, his widow, Isabella Amey, died. She was buried initially in Franklin Vault. [source: 18]
