In 1854, he immigrated to the United States. He was naturalized by 1870. [sources: 8, 10]

In 1860, he was living in Bellefonte Borough, Centre County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Mary D Valentine. [source: 7]

When he enlisted, he was an axe m[aker?]. [source: 4]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6-1/8 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. [sources: 2, 3, 4]

During the war

He also served in company B of the 10th Pennsylvania Infantry. He enlisted on 4 April 1861. He served as a private. He mustered out on 31 July 1861. [sources: 5, 11, 12 (1 May 62 to 9 Aug 64), 13]

He was a substitute for C Rhore [?]. He was enlisted and mustered into service on 14 March 1865. He was enlisted for one year, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by W [?] Poster [or Foster?]. He was a private in company K. His service was credited to the 8th subdivision of the 22nd congressional district. [sources: 1, 2, 4, 5, 14]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company K. [sources: 1, 5, 14]

After the war

He married Catherine [unknown surname]. She was born in 1848/49, in Pennsylvania. They apparently had at least these children:

In 1870, he was living in South Ward, Bellefonte, Centre County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Catherine and children Emma and John. He kept a beer saloon, and owned $200 in personal property. [source: 8]

In 1880, he was living in Bellefonte Borough, Centre County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Kate, and children Emma, John, Clara, and Nellie. He kept a restaurant. [source: 9]

In 1890, he was living in Bellefonte, Centre County, Pennsylvania. [source: 6]

On 12 December 1892, he applied successfully for a pension from Pennsylvania. [sources: 5, 13]

In 1900, he was living at 204 Bishop Street, Bellefonte, Centre County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his children Emma, Clara, Nellie, Charles, and Carrie, and with William Cassidy (apparently Emma's husband). He was a restaurant keeper. [source: 10]

On 16 September 1903, he died. He was buried in the Union Cemetery, Bellefonte, Centre County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 11, 12]
