Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair. [sources: 2, 3]

During the war

He was a substitute for D W Gill. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 22 March 1865 at Meadville, Pennsylvania, by Captain Derrickson. He was mustered in as a private in company K. His service was credited to the 32nd subdivision of the 20th congressional district. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 4]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company K. [sources: 1, 4]

Note on identification

My failure to find any census records for him may suggest that he enlisted under a pseudonym. (Or, perhaps, the age or birthplace listed in the regimental records is wrong.)

Since he served more than ninety days and was honorably discharged, he would have been eligible for a pension in 1890. The fact that he did not apply for one (based on the pension index cards) may suggest that he had died by 1890.
