In 1860, he was living in Jefferson Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents David and Agnes Ankeney, and Susan and Samuel Ankeny (presumably his siblings). He was a farmer, and had attended school within the year. [source: 7]

During the war

He was drafted. He enlisted on 11 March 1865. He was mustered into service as a private on 11 March 1865, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He was a private, in company B. [sources: 1, 3 (mustered in 27 March?), 4, 5, 24, 25]
