William Austin

Before the war

He was born in Pennsylvania, on 1 July 1830, to William Austin and [unknown]. [sources: date: 12; 2 (35 in 1865), 4 (1830), 7 (39 in 1870), 8 (70 in 1900, July 1829). place: 2, 7, 8, 12. parents: 12]

In 1851/52, he married Catherine [unknown family name]. She was born in November 1835, in Pennsylvania. They apparently had six children, include:

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He also served in company F of the 205th Pennsylvania Infantry. He enlisted on 8 August 1864. [source: 10]

He was drafted. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 16 March 1865 He was enlisted for one year, at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Lloyd. He was a private in company I. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 14, 15, 16]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company I. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 10 (2 Jun 65), 14, 15, 16]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Derry Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Kate (presumably his wife), and with Lola, John, Harry, and Jennie (presumably their children). He was a founder, and owned $200 in personal property. [source: 7]

In 1890, he was living in Lewistown, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. [source: 10]

In 1900, he was living on Chestnut Street, Lewistown Borough, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Catharine and daughter Edith. He was a steam engineer. [source: 8]

He died on 1 June 1907, at 61 Chestnut Street, in ward 4, Lewistown, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. He died of organic heart failure, caused by old age. He was a night watchman. On 5 [?] June 1907, he was buried in St Marks Cemetery, 6th ward, Lewistown, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 4, 5, 11, 12]

On 30 June 1909 [?], his widow successfully applied for a pension. [source: 3]

In 1910, his widow, Anna C Austin, was living at 61 Chestnut Street, ward 4, Lewistown, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. [source: 9]

On 11 January 1915, Anna C Austin died, in Lewistown, [Mifflin County,] Pennsylvania. In 1915, Annie C Austin was buried in St Marks Cemetery, Lewistown, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. She was eighty years old. She is the only other Austin listed in Find-a-grave as buried there. Perhaps she was his wife. [sources: 6, 13]
