In 1850, he was living with John J Ball (a last maker) and Elizabeth Ball, in the South Ward of Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. [source: 3]

In 1860, George Ball was living in the South Ward of Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, with Jos [?] and Elizabeth Ball. He was a lastmaker (like four other Ball's living there). [sources: 4, 5]

When he enlisted, he was a last maker. [source: 2]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 4 January 1864 or 14 January 1864. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Stretch. He was a private in company A. [sources: 1 (4 Jan), 2 (14 Jan), 6]

He deserted on 16 January 1864, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a private, in company A. He was dropped as a deserter on 3 July 1864. [sources: 1, 2, 5, 6]

an Augustus Ball (32, real estate agent, b. NJ) seems to be living in ward 9, Newark, New Jersey, with Nancy Ball (54) et al.; he is living with a George Gray (28, b. NJ, carney [???] + spring mftr) and Mary Gray (27, b. NJ) (microfilm series M593, film 881, page 271 verso = 71 handwritten)--I haven't found any other candidates (FamilySearch)
