Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. [source: 4]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 26 March 1864. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Stretch. He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Burke. He was a private in company D. [sources: 1, 4, 5, 14, 15, 16]

On 7 October 1864, Sellers reported that he was missing in action on 30 September 1864 near Peeble's House. [source: 2]

On 9 June 1865, he began a furlough, which expired on 24 June 1865. [source: 3]

He was reported returned from desertion, on 9 July 1865. [source: 6]

He mustered out with his company 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company D. [sources: 1, 5, 14, 15, 16]

After the war

On 9 October 1865, he and others published an ad in the Philadelphia Inquirer supporting Jacob E Ridgway for State Senator in the second district. [source: 7]

In 1870, he was living in ward 15, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Harriet Bailey (presumably his mother) and others (presumably siblings). He was a brick mason. [source: 9]

In 1880, he was living at 1438 28th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his mother Harriet Bailey, with four brothers, and a boarder and (presumably) niece. He was a brick mason. [source: 10]

In 1882, he was living at 2203 Virginia Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his mother Harriet, and brothers George and Harry. [source: 12]

He may be the Charles Bailey who died on 18 May 1882. He died of phthisis pulmonalis. He died at, or was buried from, 2211 Virginia Street, 15th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (his mother's residence). He was single. He was buried at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
