In 1850, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Artemas and Lewez [?] (sc. Louisa) Bennet (presumably his parents), and with Barbara, Mary, Artemas, and Tacy Bennet (presumably his siblings). He had attended school within the year. [source: 13]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, hazel eyes, and sandy hair. [source: 3]

During the war

He was drafted from the sixteenth congressional district. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864 He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He was a private in company F. [sources: 1, 3, 4 (26 Sep), 10, 15]

After the war

He married Sarah Imes. She was born in 1842/43, in Pennsylvania. They had at least these children:

In 1870, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Sarah and his children Samuel and Alfred. He was a farmer, and owned $2,000 in real estate, and $500 in personal property. [source: 5]

On 4 September 1888, he applied successfully from Maryland for a pension. [sources: 9, 10]

In 1890, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [source: 4]

In 1900, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his son Alfred and daughter-in-law Mary. He was a farmer. [source: 7]

He again applied for a pension, on 29 May 1907. He received $15 per month, under the Act of 6 February 1907. [sources: 10, 12]

On 15 July 1908, he began receiving $20 per month, retroactive to 20 June 1908. [source: 12]

In 1910, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his son Alfred and Alfred's family. He was living on his own income. [source: 8]

On 21 April 1913, he begain receiving $22.50 per month, apparently under the Act of 11 May 1912. [source: 12]

Effective 10 June 1918, he begain receiving $32 per month. [source: 12]

He died on 26 July 1919, at Flintstone, Maryland. He was survived by one sister, five children, twenty-three grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren. [sources: 10, 11, 12]
