obituary

['Death of Father Bennett'. The Herald of Gospel Liberty, 6 February 1919, page 142]
DEATH OF FATHER BENNETT

On January 9, we were summoned to the bedside of Father Bennett and, not being able to get there that day, we were more surprised to receive a message the same evening telling us of the death of Ruth Bennett, his granddaughter. We arrived there on Friday and very soon realized that it could not be very long before Father Bennett would follow, but his mind was still active and he asked me about my going to The American Christian Convention and insisted that I go and further said that he hoped our present editor would be reelected. Father Bennett has always been an ardent supporter of the Christian Church and I think a subscriber and reader of THE HERALD for over fifty years. He was strong in faith and lived day by day in a Christian's hope and on Saturday told Brother DuVall he was only waiting his time, which did not come until Monday night, about midnight, when death relieved him of all earthly cares, when he passed without a struggle and with a smile, to be with his Savior and those he loved.

Father Henry Bennett was born near Flintstone, Md., August 20, 1836, and departed this life January 13, 1919, aged 83 years, 4 months, and 23 days.

Mother Bennett, who was Ann M. Perdew, preceded him to the spirit world about thirteen years ago.

Father Bennett served in the Rebellion in Co. I, 91st Pa. Infantry and was present at Lee's surrender.

He was the father of six children, namely: Calvin Bennett, of Everett, R.D. 4; Alice, wife of O. W. Williams, of Everett, Pa.; Martha, deceased wife of Ambert Steckman, of Bedford, Pa.; Mollie, wife of U. G. Wilkins, of Everett, R.D. 6; Sadie A., wife of Ira D. Mellott, of Warfordsburg, R.D. 1, and Malinda, who died at the age of about sixteen years.

Funeral services were held at the Mt. Union Christian church, of which the deceased had been a member ever since he moved to this neighborhood, about forty-five years ago. Funeral sermon by Rev. John Bennett, of Artemas, Pa., assisted by Rev. Lewis A. DuVall.
