Joseph Bennett

Before the war

He was born in 1836/39, in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, to Joseph Bennett III and Margaret Barkman. [sources: date: 4 (25 in 1864), 7 (23 in 1860), 8 (31 in 1870), 9 (44 in 1880), 12 (Mar 1827 [sic]), 14 (15 in 1850). place: 4, 7, 8, 9, 14. parents: 7, 12, 14]

In 1850, he was living in Southampton, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents Joseph and Margaret Bennet, and others (presumably siblings). He was a farmer, and had attended school within the year. [source: 14]

In 1860, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Joseph and Margaret Bennett (presumably his parents), along with other people. He was a farm laborer. [source: 7]

When he enlisted, he was a farmer. [source: 4]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 9-1/2 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. [source: 4]

During the war

He was drafted from the sixteenth congressional district. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864. He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He was a private in company F. [sources: 1, 4, 5 (10 Sep), 15]

He was discharged by general order on 22 June 1865. He was a private, in company F. [sources: 1, 3 (1 Jun 64), 5, 15]

After the war

He married Annmair Johnson. She was born in 1848/49, in Pennsylvania, to William P Johnson and Savila Craig. They had at least these children:

In 1870, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (post office Chaneysville). He was living with his wife Ann Marie and his children Cornelia and Irvin. He was laboring on a farm. [source: 8]

On 21 April 1871, he applied successfully for a pension. [sources: 10, 11]

Sometime in the 1870's, he swore a statement supporting James Aaron's application for a pension. [source: 6]

In 1880, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Ann Maria, his children C Delia, Irvin, Appalona, Elwood, and Robert, and a farm worker. He was farming. [source: 9]

On 14 October 1881, his wife died. She was buried in the Mount Zion Christian Cemetery, Chaneysville, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [source: 12]

In 1890, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford Township, Pennsylvania. [source: 5]

On 27 February 1890, his minor dependent, Charles [?] William Popeln [?], applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 10, 11]

He died on 1 November 1895. He was a member of the GAR. He was buried in the Mount Zion Graveyard, in Chaneysville, Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 2, 11, 12 (3 Nov 1895)]
