Before the war

He was born in Mercer, Greene County, Pennsylvania, in March 1839, to Christopher W and Sarah Bilby. In 1850, he was living in Jefferson Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Christopher and Sarah Bilby (presumably his parents) along with several others (presumably siblings). [source: 9]

In 1860, he was living in Jackson Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania. He was living with Christopher and Sarah Bilby (presumably his parents), and five other Bilby's (presumably his siblings). He had attended school in the previous year. [source: 5]

When he enlisted, he was a farmer. [source: 2]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He was a substitute. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 16 March 1865. He was enlisted for 2 [sic] years, at North Branton [?? (probably New Brighton, Beaver, Pennsylvania)], by Captain Calbertson [?]. He was a private in company I. [sources: 1, 2, 3 (1864), 8, 18, 19]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private, in company I. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 8, 18, 19]

After the war

In 1869/70, he married Susan Leathe Rumbaugh. She was born in April 1840, in Pennsylvania. They apparently had six children, including:

On 11 November 1879, he applied successfully for a pension. [sources: 4, 8]

In 1880, he was living in Kiskiminetas Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Susan and his children Rena, Sallie, Jemima, and Daniel. He was a blacksmith. [source: 6]

In 1890, he was living in Kiskiminster Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. He had a gun shot wound in his arm. [source: 3]

In 1900, he was living in Allegheny Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Susan, and children Jeanetta, Daniel, and Alva. He was a carpenter. [source: 7]

On 25 September 1906, a new pension certificate was issued, under the Act of 27 June 1890, increasing his pension to $6 per month, retroactive to 18 March 1897, and to $10 per month effective 12 April 1905. [source: 12]

In 1910, he was living on Sharpville Road, Hickory, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Susan, son Daniel, and a friend. He was a farmer, on his own farm. [source: 15]

On 30 [?] August 1910, he again applied for a pension, under the Act of 6 February 1907. He received $12 per month, effective 30 August 1910; the certificate was dated 16 September 1910. [sources: 8, 12]

His pension was increased to $13 per month, effective 22 May 1912; the certificate was dated 21 October 1912, apparently under the Act of 11 May 1912. [source: 12]

Apparently on 25 January 1919, a new pension certificate was issued. His pension was increased to $15 per month, retroactive to 18 March 1913. His pension was increased to $18 per month, retroactive to 18 March 1917. His pension was increased to $30 per month, retroactive to 10 June 1918. [source: 12]

On 5 April 1919, his wife, Susan Bilby, died, in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. [source: 17]

In 1920, he was living in Hickory Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his daughter and son-in-law Janette and Andrew Storey, with his son Daniel, and with his grandchildren Jannette and Morris Bilby. He was widowed. He was not working. [source: 11]

He applied for a pension under the Act of 1 May 1920, and received $50 per month, retroactive to 1 May 1920. [source: 12]

He died on 17 January 1925, at Sharon, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He was buried in the Byerley Cemetery, Sharpsville, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 8, 12, 13, 16]
