When he enlisted, he was a bricklayer. He was living in Philadelphia when he enlisted. [sources: 2, 8]
When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6-1/2 inches tall, had a dark complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair. [sources: 2, 8 (5'6", black hair)]
He enlisted and was mustered into service on 28 August 1861, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was enlisted by Captain Lentz, and mustered into service by Colonel Reiff. He was a private, in company E. [sources: 1, 2, 8, 17, 18]
He deserted on 18 May 1862, at Washington DC. He was caught on 7 March 1864. On 18 March 1864, he was reported regained from desertion. On 19 March 1864, Lieutenant Colonel Sinex asked that he be released from arrest, reporting that he had been sent to the peninsula after being arrested and hadn't received pay for eleven months (!?). Braceland was returned to his company for duty, without being court martialed, on two conditions: that he lose all pay and allowances for the time he was absent, and that he make good all time lost. In May or June 1864, he lost two Springfield rifle muskets and one set of accoutrements. [source: 6]

He married Annie [unknown family name]. She was born in September 1847, in Canada. She had four children, of whom two were alive in 1900, and one in 1910, including: [sources: 7, 15, 16]
