91st PA: Joshua Brendlinger

Joshua Brendlinger

Before the war

I believe he did not serve in the 91st Pennsylvania.

(a) Neither Bates nor any of the regimental records I currently have refer to him.
(b) The index to the compiled service records (on Fold) does not include any Joshua Brendlinger in the Pennsylvania cards (accessed 17 January 2015).
(c) His Find-a-grave memorial lists him as having served in the 97th Pennsylvania Infantry (3).
(d) The only Joshua Brendlinger in the Pennsylvania Civil War Veterans' cards on the Pennsylvania State Archives ARIAS site served from 2 July 1863 to 11 August 1863 in company D of the 42nd Militia [see Bates volume 5 page 1272]. (And the only John Brendlinger in those cards mustered in to company E of the 19th Pennsylvania Infantry on 27 April 1861, at Philadelphia.)
(e) And the 1890 veterans schedules seem to have the same person serving in the 191st Pennsylvania Infantry (4).

Before the war

He was born on 11 September 1840, in New Hanover, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (2, 3, 5 [69 in 1910]).

During the war

He served in company B of the 91st Pennsylvania Infantry (1, 2) or in the 97th Pennsylvania Infantry (3), or in company G of the 191st Pennsylvania Infantry (4). He served from 2 March 1865 through 10 July 1865 (2) or 19 March 1865 through July 1865 (4).

After the war

In 1872/73, he married Mary A [unknown family name] (5). In 1910, she reported having had four children, all of whom were alive (5). This was apparently the second marriage for both of them (5).

In 1890, he was living in Douglass Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (4).

On 14 March 1898, he applied successfully for a pension (1).

On 23 March 1907, he again applied for a pension (1).

In 1910, he was living in Douglas Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (5). He was living with his wife Mary, and a boarder (5). He was a farmer, on a general farm (5).

On 29 May 1912, he died, in New Hanover, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 3). He was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Boyertown, Colebrookdale Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania (2, 3).

On 19 June 1912, his widow applied successfully for a pension (1).
