Before the war

He was born on 24 October 1828 (10, 12; 3 (36 in 1864), 6 [22 in 1850], 7 [32 in 1860], 8 [42 in 1870], 9 [52 in 1880], 10 [71 in 1900]) He was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania (3, 6, 7, 8 [MD], 9, 10).

He married Eliza J [unknown family name] (12). She was born on 6 February 1831 (12).

In 1850, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with his wife Eliza, children George and Henry, and one other person (6). He was a farmer (6).

In 1860, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his wife Eliza, children George, Herny, John, William, and Elizabeth Ann (7). He was a farmer, and owned $400 in real estate and $50 in personal property (7).

When he enlisted, he was a farmer (3).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10 inches tall, and had a florid complexion, gray eyes, and dark hair (3).

During the war

He was drafted from the sixteenth congressional district (1, 3). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864 (1, 3, 11). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (3). He was a private in company F (1, 13).

He was discharged near Washington DC by general order on 1 June 1865 (1, 2, 11). He was a private, in company F (13).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Southampton Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his wife Eliza, and children Henry, John, William, Elizabeth, Marenda [??], Meshach, Mary Ella, Barbara, and Anne (8). He was a farmer, and owned $700 in real estate and $300 in personal property (8).

In 1880, he was living in Flintstone District, Allegany County, Maryland (9). He was living with his wife Eliza, and children Mechach, Melinda, Mary E, Barbara, Annie, Rachel, and his father Ephraim (9). He was a farmer (9).

On 15 June 1881, he applied successfully from Maryland for a pension (4, 11).

His daughter, Barbara Browning, died on 18 July 1885, and was buried in the Browning Cemetery, Allegany County, Maryland (12).

In 1890, he was living in Flintstone, Allegany County, Maryland (5).

His wife, Eliza J Browning, died on 31 January 1895 (12). She was buried in the Browning Cemetery, Allegany County, Maryland (12).

In 1900, he was living in Flintstone District, Allegany County, Maryland (10). He was living with his grandson William Browning and William's family (10). He was a landlord (10). He was widowed (10).

He again applied for a pension on 1 March 1907 (11).

He died on 30 March 1908 (11, 12). He was buried in the Browning Cemetery, Allegany County, Maryland (12).
