David Alexander Buchanan

Before the war

He was born on 10 May 1827, in Ireland. [sources: date: 15, 19 (10 May 1828); 10 (33 in 1864), 15 (86 yrs 9 mos. 12 dys at death), 16 (84 in 1910), 20 (31 in 1860), 21 (55 in 1870), 22 (48 in 1880). place: 10, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22]

He immigrated in 1845. He was naturalized by 1870. [sources: 16, 19, 21]

In 1848, he married Jane McIntyre, in the Kensington Old Brick Church, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was born in 1827, in County Donegal, Ireland. They had three children:

In 1860, he was living in ward 18, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was an ingrain carpet weaver, and owned $230 in personal property. He was living with his (presumed) wife Jane, children Robert and Sarah, and with an apprentice. [source: 20]

When he enlisted, he was a laborer. [source: 10]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. [source: 10]

During the war

He was an employee of the Medical Department of US Volunteers. [sources: 12, 14]

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 3 February 1864. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Shipley. He was mustered by Lieutenant Burke. He was a private in company D. [sources: 1, 10, 14, 17, 18]

On 2 March 1864, Colonel Gregory detached him for duty with the recruiting service in Chester, Pennsylvania. On 27 April 1864, Sinex asked that he be returned to the regiment. [sources: 3, 4, 5]

He served at Petersburg, and was in City Point Hospital, for typhus. [source: 2]

On 9 September 1864, he was detailed as hospital attendant, replacing Andrew Fleming (A). On 15 October 1864, Sellers reported that Buchanan was a hospital attendant at the division hospital under the authority of surgeon William Kier, but had not been regularly detailed. [sources: 6, 7, 9, 11]

On 26 January 1865, he went on a furlough, which ended on 5 February 1865. [source: 8]

He was mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company. He was a private, in company D. [sources: 1, 14, 17, 18]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 22, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a carpet weaver, and owned $500 in personal property. He was living with his (presumed) wife Jane, and children Robert, Sarah, and James. [source: 21]

In 1880, he was livign at 2120 Amber Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Jane, his son James, a boarder, and his nephew William J Buchanan. He was a carpet weaver. [source: 22]

On 26 March 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. He continued receiving that pension until his death. [sources: 12, 13, 14]

On 24 December 1894, his wife, Jane, died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was buried in Fernwood Cemetery, Fernwood, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. [source: 19]

He again applied for a pension on 13 February 1907. [source: 14]

In 1910, he was living at 309 51st Street, ward 34, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his son Robert and his grandson Jerico [?]. He was not working. [source: 16]

He died of chronic valvular heart disease (duration 10 years), with bronchitis (duration 7 days) contributing, on 22 February 1914, at 652 N 38th St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was widowed. He was a weaver. On 26 February 1914, he was buried, in Fernwood Cemetery, Fernwood, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 13, 14, 15, 19]
