91st PA: Joseph Clowney

Joseph Clowney

Before the war

He was born in 1835/36 (2 (25 in 1861), 2 (27 in 1863), 3 (28 in 1863), 9 (25 in 1861)). He was born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania (3, 9 [Philadelphia]).

When he enlisted, he was a teamster, and was living in Philadelphia (3, 9).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 6 feet 3/4 inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (3, 9 [6'1"]).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 24 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 9). He was a private, in company E (1, 11).

He was on the company muster rolls for 31 October and 31 December 1861 (2).

He was present on muster rolls from January/February 1862 to September/October 1862 (2). On the November/December 1862 roll, he was marked absent: "Brigade teamster since [the sentence ends here]" (2). He was present from 1 November 1862 to 10 May 1863, and on the May/June through November/December 63 muster rolls (2). It was not stated whether he was present on a special muster roll, of 10 April 1863 (2).

He fought at the battle of Gettysburg (5).

On 28 July 1863, he was detailed for duty with the brigade train (6).

He re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer at Bealton Virginia on 24 December 1863, for 3 years (1, 2, 3, 9 [26 Dec]). He was enlisted by Lieutenant Carpenter (3). He was mustered in on 26 December, by Lieutenant Swann (2, 3).

When he re-enlisted, his description was: blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 6'1" tall; residence Philadelphia PA, born Delaware County PA; occupation teamster; 27 years old (2). He was due $6.70 for clothing not drawn in kind, $60 in bounty, Adv Pay $13 [?], and premium $2 (2).

He was present on the January/February and March/April 1864 muster rolls, having received 1 months pay in advance (2).

On 24 March 1864, Sinex requested that Clowney and Isaac Tyson replace Harry Angel and Charles Armstrong, apparently on a detail (7). On 26 March 1864, they were detailed by Colonel Jenkins as teamsters (4, 8, 10). From May/June 1864 through May/June 1865 he was present, detailed as a Brigade Teamster (2, 8 re Sep 1864).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 2, 9). He was a private, in company E (11). He was due $16.85 for clothing, and owed $6.00 for arms retained; he had been paid $210 bounty and was owed $190 (2).

After the war

It is tempting to think he is the Joseph Clowney who married Ellen Haughey, widow of Charles Haughey (E), and (apparently) died on 21 November 1869.
