When he enlisted, he was 6 feet 3/4 inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair (3, 9 [6'1"]).
During the war
He enlisted and was mustered into service on 24 August 1861, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1, 2, 9).
He was a private, in company E (1, 11).
He was on the company muster rolls for 31 October and 31 December 1861 (2).
He was present on muster rolls from January/February 1862 to September/October 1862 (2). On the November/December 1862 roll, he was marked absent: "Brigade teamster since [the sentence ends here]" (2). He was present from 1 November 1862 to 10 May 1863, and on the May/June through November/December 63 muster rolls (2). It was not stated whether he was present on a special muster roll, of 10 April 1863 (2).
He re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer at Bealton Virginia on 24 December 1863, for 3 years (1, 2, 3, 9 [26 Dec]).
He was enlisted by Lieutenant Carpenter (3).
He was mustered in on 26 December, by Lieutenant Swann (2, 3).
When he re-enlisted, his description was: blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 6'1" tall; residence Philadelphia PA, born Delaware County PA; occupation teamster; 27 years old (2).
He was due $6.70 for clothing not drawn in kind, $60 in bounty, Adv Pay $13 [?], and premium $2 (2).
He was present on the January/February and March/April 1864 muster rolls, having received 1 months pay in advance (2).
He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 2, 9).
He was a private, in company E (11).
He was due $16.85 for clothing, and owed $6.00 for arms retained; he had been paid $210 bounty and was owed $190 (2).
After the war
It is tempting to think he is the Joseph Clowney who married Ellen Haughey, widow of Charles Haughey (E), and (apparently) died on 21 November 1869.
