91st PA--Jesse Connard

Jesse Connard

Note on identification

I've split this into two sections, one with the very limited evidence clearly linked to the Jesse Conard who enlisted in the 91st, and the other two with two candidates. The evidence doesn't (yet) prove whether those two candidates are the same person, or two distinct people.

the Jesse who enlisted in the 91st Pennsylvania

Before the war

He was born in 1831/32, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [sources: date: 1 (30 in 1862). place: 2]

When he enlisted, he was a shoemaker. [source: 2]

Description

When he enlisted, he had blue eyes, dark hair, and a fair complexion, and was 5 feet 7-1/2 inches tall. [source: 2]

During the war

On 13 October 1862, he enlisted, as a volunteer, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was enlisted for three years by Lieutenant J A Gregory. He was paid $25 in bounty, and a $4 premium. He was a private, in company C. [sources: 1, 2]

He was listed on a Muster and Descriptive Roll of a Detachment of US Vols forwarded for the 91 Reg't Pennsylvania Inf, dated 16 October 1862. But he is not borne on any company muster rolls. [source: 2]

[sources: 24, 25, 26, 30 (65 in 1882)]

In 1860, he was living in ward 19, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The city directories make very likely that he was living on Carroll Street, north of Otis Street. She was previously married, to Haywood Morgan (and she was married to Jesse Conard under the name 'Margaret Morgan'); he died on 29 June 1886. She was born on 20 April 1859, in New Jersey, to James Conroy and [unknown]. They seem to have had at least these children:

  • Benjamin Fenton Conard (born 26 Sep 1894, PA; died 1982)

Ancestry's index has only one Jacob Wein in Philadelphia, in ward 17, district 51, page 62 recto = 123 handwritten to 62 verso = 124 handwritten; no Jesse Conard is on either of those pages
