He enlisted and was mustered into service on 10 January 1864 or 11 January 1864. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Stretch. The 1890 census has two entries for him. According to one, he was living at 234 Allen Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sadie Cornwell was also living there. According to the other, he was living at 1211 East Susquehanna Avenue, Philadelphia. He was a fireman. He had been wounded in the eye. William Cornwell was also living there. [sources: 5, 6, 7]
In 1910, he was living at 1309 Flora Street, 20th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a carpenter, and had been out of work 50 weeks in the previous year. He was living with his wife Sally, his mother-in-law, and a stepson. [source: 10]
He died on 8 April 1923, at 1211 East Susquehanna Street, ward 18, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of chronic aortic regurgitation (2 years duration), with chronic prostatitis (5 months duration) contributing. He was a retired city fireman.
