Before the war

When he enlisted, he was a laborer, and was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4, 7).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 3 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (4, 6, 7 [light hair]). He was marked with smallpox (6).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 30 November 1861 (1, 4, 6). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Casner (4, 6). He was mustered into service at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant L T Matlack (4, 6). He was a private, in company K (4, 6, 9).

He was absent without leave on 9 February 1863 (2).

He was reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 26 December 1863 (4, 7). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Carpenter (4, 7). He was mustered in by Lieutenant Swan (7).

He was killed on 27 October 1864 at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, by being shot in the head [?] (1, 3, 4, 5, 8). He was a private, in company K (9). He was buried at Poplar Grove National Cemetery, Petersburg, division D, section H, grave 19 (grave 2293) (1, 3, 4).
