In 1850, he seems to have been living in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey. He was living with George and Elisabeth Couch (perhaps his parents), and with Joseph, Hannah, and Robert Couch (perhaps siblings). [source: 14]
He enlisted and was mustered into service on 9 July 1863. He enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a private in company D. [sources: 1, 3, 6 (2 Sep 1862), 15]

In 1865/66, he married Maria Somers. She was born on 31 July 1836, in New Jersey, to Nicholas R Somers and Mary Lake. They apparently had one child:
