Before the war

He was born in October 1844 (2, 6, 7; 3 (22 in 1865), 6 [55 in 1900], 7 [66 in 1910]). He was born in Pennsylvania (2, 3 (Germany), 6, 7). His parents were both born in Germany (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 3-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair (3).

During the war

He was a substitute (1). He was enlisted for one year, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, by JH Foster, on 15 February 1865 (3, 10 [16 Feb]). He was mustered into service on 16 February 1865 (1). He was a private in company C (1, 12, 13).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 10). He was a private, in company C (12, 13).

After the war

He married Anna Maria Kline (or Klein), about 1891 (2, 6, 7). They had three children (2, 6):

On 5 September 1894, he applied successfully from California for a pension (5, 10).

In 1900, he was living at 1731 Eddy Street, San Francisco, California (6). He was living with his wife Annie, and their three children (6). He was a house painter (6).

On 10 April 1907, he again applied for a pension (10).

In 1910, he was living in Red Bluff Township, Olhamra [??], California (7). He was living with his wife Annie M and their three children (7). He was a farmer (7).

He died on 12 November 1916, in California (2, 4, 10, 11). He was buried in the San Francisco National Cemetery, in San Francisco, San Francisco County, California (4, 11).

On 24 November 1916, his widow, Anna M Czerny, applied successfully from California for a pension (5, 10).

In 1920, his widow, Anna M Czerny, was living at 371 Prentiss Street, San Francisco, California (8). She was living with her three children (8).

In 1930, his widow, Anna Czerny, was living in Alameda, Alameda County, California (9). She owned the house, which was worth $4,000 (9).

His widow, Anna Czerny, died on 8 May 1956, in Sonoma County, California (2).
