Before the war

On 29 June 1835, he was born, in Pennsylvania. On 11 January 1837, Mahala Serena Grosh was born, in East Hepfield Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to Daniel J Grosh and Frances Vogan Martin. [sources: 8, 9, 15, 16]

On 15 July 1856, he married Mahala Serina Grosh, at First Presbyterian Church of Kensington, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was born in January 1837, in Pennsylvania. They had three children:

On 7 May 1862, he was a contracter. [source: 8]

When he enlisted, he was a weaver. [source: 5]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 10-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. [source: 5]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 22 February 1864. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Gregory. He was mustered in as a private in company H by Lieutenant Snyder. [sources: 1, 5, 17]

He was wounded on 18 June 1864 at Petersburg, Virginia. He died on 24 June 1864 at the Fifth Army Corps Hospital, City Point, Virginia, of those wounds. He was a private, in company H. He was buried at City Point National Cemetery, section E. After the war

On 24 October 1864, his widow, Mahala S Crise, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension, under the act of 14 July 1862. She was living at 2420 Carl Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her application was accepted on 16 March 1865. She initially received $8 per month, retroactive to 24 June 1864. [sources: 3, 6, 8]

On 12 April 1867, Mahala Crise applied for an increase in pension, under the act of 25 July 1866. She was living in Smithville, Burlington County, New Jersey. Her application was accepted in May 1868, and she received an additional $2 per month for each child less than 16 years old, retroactive to 25 July 1866. [source: 8]

In 1870, his widow, Mahala Crise, was living in Lumberton Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. She was living with their children William, Fanny, and Daniel, and with Daniel I Crise. She owned real estate worth $1,500. [source: 11]

In 1880, his widow, Mahla S Crise, was living at 2335 Coral Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was living with her children William, Fannie, Daniel, and Minnie. [source: 7]

In 1900, his widow, M S Crise, was living with her daughter Fannie and Fannie's family. She was living in Effingham, Effingham County, Illinois. [source: 12]

In 1910, his widow, Mahala S Crise, was living in Chaffee, Scott County, Missouri. She was living with her daughter Fannie and Fannie's family. [source: 13]

On 21 January 1917, Mahala S Crise requested an increase in her pension to $20 per month, under the act of 8 September 1916. She was living in Arkoma, LeFlore County, Oklahoma. [source: 8]

In 1920, his widow, Mahala S Crise, was living in Effingham, Effingham County, Illinois. She was living with her daughter Fannie and Fannie's husband Ferdinand Loy. [source: 14]

Mahala Crise's pension was increased to $30 per month under the act of 1 May 1920. [source: 8]

On 4 August 1926, Mahala S Crise applied for an increase in pension to $50 per month, under the act of 3 July 1926. She was living at 1603 Dodson Avenue, Fort Smith, Arkansas. Her application was approved in September, retroactive to 4 August. [source: 8]

On 19 October 1927, his widow, Mahala S Crise, died, in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas. She died of pneumonia. She was buried in the Loy Chapel Cemetery, Effingham County, Illinois. [sources: 8, 9, 15, 16]

Their daughter, Fannie E Loy, of Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas, applied for reimbursement for $25 in physician's expenses, which she received. She had received $360 in life insurance, which covered many of the costs of Mahala Crise's funeral. [source: 8]
