William Critzer

Before the war

He was born in 1839/40 (4 (21 in 1861), 5 [23 in 1863], 8 [21 in 1860], 9 [9 in 1850]). He was born in Milton, Pennsylvania (4, 5, 8, 9).

In 1850, he was living in Milton Borough, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with Baltyer [?] and Maria [?] Kritzer (presumably his parents), and with six other Kritzer's (presumably siblings) (9). He had attended school within the year (9).

In 1860, he was living in Milton Borough, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with Reuben, Sarah, Adam, Clara, William, and Elisabeth Kritzer (8). He was a boatman (8).

When he enlisted, he was a boatman (4, 5).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair (4, 5).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 25 October 1861 (1, 4, 7). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Hall (4). He was a private in company F (1, 11 (1st sgt), 12 (sgt), 13 (sgt), 14 (sgt)).

He was initially listed on the plaque recording men who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg, but his name was later deleted (10).

He was relieved from duty in the Pioneer Corps on 15 August 1863 (2).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer on 24 December 1863 (1, 5). He was enlited for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant W H Carpenter (5).

He deserted from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 2 August 1864 (1, 3 [may be 27 Aug 64], 7). He was a private, in company F (11, 12, 13, 14).

After the war

On 31 March 1891, he applied unsuccessfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 7).
