John S Delamater

Before the war

He was born in December 1843 (10; 4 (19 in 1861), 5 [21, probably in 1863], 8 [27 in 1870], 9 [37 in 1880], 10 [56 in 1900], 11 [65 in 1910], 12 [77 in 1920], 13 [8 in 1850], 14 [18 in 1860]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14).

In 1850, he was living in Middle Ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with John and Mary (presumably his parents), and four presumed siblings (13).

In 1860, he was living in the 24th ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). He was a book binder apprentice (14). He was living with John and Mary (presumably his parents), and with Catharine and Cecelia (presumably his siblings) (14).

When he enlisted, he was a paper ha[nger] (4, 5).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a light complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (4, 5).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 26 December 1861 (1, 4, 5, 7 [20 Dec], 15). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Sellers (4, 5). He was a private in company G (1, 16, 17).

On 8 September 1863, Sinex reported that he was in Philadelphia and able to rejoin the regiment, and requested his return (2).

He was discharged at camp near Fort Stevens, Virginia, on 26 December 1864, when his term expired (1, 3, 5, 7 [20 Dec], 15). He was a private, in company G (16, 17).

After the war

In 1866/67, he married Emma E [unknown surname, perhaps 'Wood'] (10). In 1900 and 1910, she had had five children, all of whom were alive (10, 11).

In 1870, he was living in the South Ward of Camden, Camden County, New Jersey (8). He was living with his wife Emma, son Henry, and Emma's family (8). He was a bookbinder (8).

In 1880, he was living at 324 Line Street, Camden, Camden County, New Jersey (9). He was living with his wife Emma, their children, and Emma's mother and family (9). He was a bookbinder.

In 1890, he was living at 324 Line Street, Camden, New Jersey (7).

On 10 October 1891, he applied successfully for a pension (6, 15).

In 1900, he was living at 324 Line Street, Camden, Camden County, New Jersey (10). He was living with his wife, four children, and a boarder (10). He was a bookbinder, and had not been out of work in the previous year (10).

On 18 February 1907, he again applied for a pension (15).

In 1910, he was living at 324 [Line Street?], Camden, Camden County, New Jersey (11). He was living with his wife Emma, sons Alex and John, and a sister (11). He was a bookbinder at a publishing store, and had not been out of work in the previous year (11).

In 1920, he was living at 324 Line Street, Camden, Camden County, New Jersey (12). He was living with his wife Emma and son John (12). He was not working (12).

He died on 6 November 1921, at Camden, New Jersey (15).

On 21 December 1921, his widow, Emma E Delamater, applied successfully from New Jersey for a pension (6, 15).
