Jacob Dobler

Before the war

He was born on 21 March 1848 (4, 8; 2 (19 in 1861), 6 [2 in 1850], 7 [22 in 1870]). He was born in New Berlin, Union County, Pennsylvania (2, 4, 6, 7, 8). He was born to John Henry Doebler and Mary Amelia Starr (4).

In 1850, he was living in New Berlin Borough, Union County, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with his parents Henry and Amelie Doebler (6).

When he enlisted, he was a railroa[d worker] (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 2-3/4 inches tall, and had a medium complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He also served in company D of the 43rd Pennsylvania Militia Infantry (3, 4, 11). He enlisted on 29 June 1863, and was discharged on 13 August 1863 (4).

He was a substitute (1, 2). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 27 March 1865 (1, 2, 11). He was enlisted for one year, at Pottsville, Pennsylvania, by Captain Bowen (2). He was mustered in as a private in company H (1, 12, 13).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 11). He was a private, in company H (12, 13).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Catawissa, Columbia County, Pennsylvania (7). He was a "brakeman on car" (7).

He was a messenger for 46 years on the P & R Railroad, with the United States and American Express Companies (4).

He married (1) Emma Jane Harder (4). They had four children (4):

Emma Doebler died on 18 November 1876, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania (4).

He married (2) Sarah Catherine Harder in 1881/1882 (4, 8). They had one child (4, 8):

In 1890, he was living in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (5).

On 5 October 1891, he applied successfully for a pension (3, 11).

In 1900, he was living at 311 Park Street, Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (8). He was an ex. [express?] messenger (8). He was living with his wife Sarah and son Roy (8).

On 22 March 1910, he applied again for a pension (11).

He died on 7 August 1916, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania (4, 11).

On 10 August 1916, his widow, Sarah C Dobler, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (3, 11).

In 1920, his widow, Sarah Doebler, was living in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (9). She was living with her son [sic] Harold, and next door to her son Roy and his family (9).

In 1930, his widow, Sarah C Doebler, was living at 311 Park Street, Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (10). She owned the house, which was worth $6,000 (10). She was living next door to her son Roy and his family (10).
