Before the war

He was born in 1841/42 (2 [19 in 1861], 3 [20 in 1861], 4 (22 in 1864)). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2, 4).

When he enlisted, he was a laborer, and was living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2, 3, 4).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 3-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and light hair (2, 3 [5'4"], 4).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 24 September 1861 (1, 2, 3, 7). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Sinex (2, 3). He was mustered in service as a private, by Captain Dye (2, 3). He was a private in company D (1, 8, 9, 10).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (5).

He reenlisted as a veteran volunteer at Bealton, Virginia, on 26 December 1863 (1, 3, 4). He was enlisted for three years, at Bealton, Virginia, by Lieutenant Swan (4). He was mustered on 27 December 1863, by Lieutenant Swan (4).

He was wounded on 21 June 1864 (1, 3).

He was absent, in hospital, when the regiment mustered out (1, 3). He was a private, in company D (8, 9, 10).

After the war

On 25 November 1865, he applied successfully for a pension (6, 7).
