Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (3).

During the war

He was drafted (1). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 28 February 1865 (1, 2, 3, 4 [30 Feb]). He was enlisted for 1 year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster (3). His enlistment was credited to the 16th congressional district (3). He served as a private in company A (1, 16).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 2, 4). He was a private in company A (16).

After the war

He married Sarah Jane Cool in 1867/68 (9, 10, 11 [1870]). They had nine children (11):

In 1870, he was living in Liberty Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (post office Gettysburg) (7). He was living with his wife Sarah Jane, and their 3 month old child Samuel (7). He was a carpenter, and owned $200 in personal property (7).

He applied successfully for a pension from Pennsylvania on 14 July 1891 and on 19 February 1907 (2, 5).

In 1900, he was living in Liberty Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his wife Sarah, and their children John [?] and Mary (9). He was a farmer (9).

In 1910, he was living in Freedom Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Sarah (10). He was a farmer (10).

His wife died on 10 October 1910 (12). She was buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Fairfield (12).

In 1920, he was living in Hamiltonban Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (15) He was living witih his son James, and James's family (15). He was not working (15).

He died on 1 December 1929 at Fairfield, Pennsylvania (2, 11, 12). He was buried in St Mary's Cemetery, Fairfield, Adams County, Pennsylvania (12).
