Edward J Farrell

Before the war

He was born in 1834/35, in Killdare, Ireland, perhaps to Hugh Farrel and Judith [unknown family name]. [sources: date: 2 (29 in 1864), 5 (47 in 1881), 8 (16 in 1850), 9 (25 in 1860), 10 (34 in 1870), 11 (45 in 1880). place: 2, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11. parents: 8?]

In 1850, he may have been living in ward 6, Southwark, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. If so, he was living with Hugh and Judith Farrel (presumably his parents), and with Catharine, Mary, Ann, Bridget, and Elizabeth Farrel (presumably his siblings). [source: 8]

He married Margaret [unknown family name]. She was born in April 1836, in Pennsylvania. They apparently had these seven children:

[sources: 9, 10, 11, 12]

In 1860, he may be the Edward Farrell who was living in ward 2, Philadelphia, Pennsylania. If so, he was living with his wife Margaret, their children Edward and Francis, and Bridget Sweeney. He was a mariner. [source: 9]

When he enlisted, he was a butcher. [source: 2]

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8-1/2 inches tall, had a fair complexion, dark eyes, and brown hair. [source: 2]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service, as a recruit, for three years, on 28 January 1864, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. He was enlisted by Lieutenant Shipley, and mustered into service by Lieutenant Hilderburn. He was a private, in company E. [sources: 1, 2, 14]

On 1 February 1865, he went on a furlough, which ended on 16 March 1865. [source: 4]

He was promoted to corporal on 1 July 1865 or 5 July 1865. [sources: 1 (1 July), 3 (5 July)]

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company. He was a corporal, in company E. [sources: 1, 14]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 2, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Margaret, and their (presumed) children Frank, Edw[ard], Josephine, Kate, and Charles. He was a butcher. [source: 10]

In 1880, he was living at 18 Reed Street, ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Margaret, their children Josephine, Kate, Charles, William, and James, and a boarder. He was a butcher. [source: 11]

He died on 9 December 1881, of disease of heart. He died at or was buried from 618 E Reed [?] Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was then a butcher. He was then married. He was buried on 12 December 1881, at New Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 5, 6]

On 7 July 1890, his widow Margaret Farrell applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 6, 7]

In 1900, his wife, Margaret Farrell, was living at 1406 South 12th Street, ward 26, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was living with her children Edward, Charles, William, and James Farrell, and her daughter Katharine Cunningham. [source: 12]
