Before the war

He was born in December 1844 (7; 2 (19 in 1864), 6 [54 in 1899], 9 [63 at death in 1908], 10 [54 in 1899]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2, 6, 7, 10).

When he enlisted, he was a machinist (2).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had a light complexion, grey eyes, and dark hair (2).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 3 February 1864 (1, 2, 3 [9 Feb]). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Shipley (2). He was mustered in by Lieutenant Hildebrand (2). He was a private in company D (1, 10, 11, 12).

He was wounded on 10 May 1864 at Spottsylvania Court House, Virginia (1, 5).

He was discharged on 18 August 1865 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 3). He had served for eighteen months (6, 10). He was a private in company D (11, 12).

He also served in 55 company 2 battalion VRC (8).

After the war

On 8 September 1865, he applied successfully for a pension (4, 8).

In 1879/1880, he was married, presumably to Elizabeth [unknown surname] (7).

In 1890, he was living at 2919 French Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3).

On 2 May 1899, he was admitted to the Southern Branch of the National Soldiers' Home (6). He was admitted from Pennsylvania (6). He had a gunshot wound in his right arm (6). He was receiving a pension of $10 per month (6).

In 1900, he was in the Southern Branch of the National Soldiers' Home (7). He was a machinist (7).

On 1 March 1907, he again applied for a pension (8).

On 4 September 1908, he died of terminal dementia (duration 1 year), with mitral insufficiency contributing, in the National Soldiers Home, in Elizabeth City County, Virginia (8, 9, 10). On 7 September 1908, he was buried in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was then receiving a pension of $12 per month (10).

On 11 September 1908, his widow, Elizabeth Flynn, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (4, 8).
