Oscar Foust

Before the war

He was born on 10 July 1846 (11 [July 1847], 14; 5 (18 in 1861), 7 (4 in 1850), 8 (13 in 1860), 9 (24 in 1870), 10 (34 in 1880), 11 (53 in 1900), 12 (54 (sic) in 1910), 13 (73 in 1920)). He was born in Milton, Pennsylvania (5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13). He was born to Franklin Faust and Mary Ann Hower (14).

In 1850, he was living in Milton Borough, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with his parents Franklin and Mary Foust, and with his siblings Tilghman and John Foust (7).

In 1860, he was living in Turbot Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his parents Franklin and Mary Foust, and with others (presumably his siblings) (8).

When he enlisted, he was a farmer (5).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a light complexion, gray eyes, and light hair (5).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 25 October 1861 (1, 5, 6). He was enlisted for three years, at Milton, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Hall (5). He was a private in company F (1, 16, 17).

He was promoted to corporal on 4 March 1862 (1, 4, 5).

He deserted from Alexandria, Virginia, on 11 June 1862 (2, 3, 4, 5).

On 4 July 1864, Sellers transmitted a report about him, by William Michaels (2). According to this report he had claimed he was 18 when he was mustered in, and that he had his parents' permission; his parents had never issued a complaint (2). He had never been sick while with the company, and had always done his work (2). Perhaps he was claiming he was underage, and had enlisted without his parents' permission.

He was discharged on 8 April 1865 by general order (1, 6). He was a private, in company F (16, 17).

After the war

On 6 October 1865, he married Lizzie Jenkins (11, 12, 14). They had two known children (11, 12):

In 1870, he was living in Watsontown Borough, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his wife Lizzie, and son John (9). He was an attorney at law, and owned $300 in personal property (9).

In 1880, he was living in Watsontown Borough, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Lizzie, children John and Clara, and a servant (10). He was a lawyer (10).

In 1900, he was living in Iola Township, Allen County, Kansas (11). He was living with his wife Lizzie, daughter Clara, and a servant (11). He was an attorney (11).

In 1910, he was living at 717 East Madison Avenue, Iola City, Allen County, Kansas (12). He was living with his wife Lizzie and daughter Clara (12). He was a Judge of the District Court (12).

On 30 August 1911, he applied successfully from Kansas for a pension (6, 15).

In 1920, he was living at 717 East Madison Avenue, ward 4, Iola City, Allen County, Kansas (7). He was living with his wife Lizzie and daughter Clara (7). He was a judge of the Circuit Court (7).

His wife, Lizzie Foust, died on 16 November 1926, in Iola, Allen County, Kansas (14).

He died on 8 March 1928, at Iola, Allen County, Kansas (6, 14 [1929, alternative date 1928]).
