He was born on 18 January 1843 (7, 10 (18 in 1861), 15 [27 in 1850], 16 [36 in 1880], 17 [Jan 1843], 18 [65 in 1910], 19 [76 in 1920], 20 [8 in 1850], 21 [17 in 1860]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21).

In 1860, he was living in ward 13, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (21). He was still living with Edward J and Martha Fox (21). He was a salesman (21).
When he was enlisted, he was a clerk (10).
When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, gray eyes, and light hair (10).
He enlisted and was mustered into service on 20 August 1861 (1, 3, 10, 11, 23). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania, by Captain Starr (10). He was a private in company A (1, 23, 24).
He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (22).
On 28 July 1863, he was detailed as a clerk in the Division Headquarters (5, 8).
On 3 September 1863, Sinex sent Fox's descriptive roll to the brigade (2). Fox was then clerk at division headquarters (2).
On 30 December 1863, Sinex reported that he was one of 38 men who had less than fifteen months to serve who were unwilling to reenlist (4). On 2 January 1864, he was transferred to the 155th Pennsylvania Infantry, while those eligible were on veterans' leave (9).
On 15 June 1864, he was detailed for duty as clerk in the corps acting adjutant general's office (6).
He mustered out on 31 August 1864, when his term expired (1, 3, 10, 11, 14, 23). He was a private, in company A (24).
In 1865/68, he married Mary A Wilhelm [?] (16, 17 [married 36 years in 1900], 18 [married 42 years in 1910]). In 1900, she had had three children, presumably the Harry, Laura, and Howard they were living with in 1880 (16, 17). All three were alive in 1900 and 1910 (17, 18).
In 1870, he was living in the 15th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). He was a bank clerk, and owned $1000 in personal property (15). He was living with his wife Mary, his children Harry and Laura, and his in-laws (15).
In 1880, he was living at 1709 Wylie Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16). He was a clerk in a bank (16). He was living with his wife Mary, his children Harry, Laura, and Howard, and his father-in-law (16).
In 1890, he was living at 1719 Wylie Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11, 12). He was a bookkeeper (12). He had heart palpitations (11).
He applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension on 13 October 1890 (3, 13).
In 1900, he was living at 1719 Wylie Street, in the 15th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17). He was a bookkeeper (17). He was living with his wife Mary and his children Laura and Howard (17).
He applied again for a pension on 16 February 1907 (3).
In 1910, he was living at 1719 Wylie Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (18). He was a bookkeeper (18). He was living with his wife Mary, his daughter Laura, and his grandson Samuel (18).
In 1920, he was living at 5836 Walton Avenue, in the 46th ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (19). He was not working (19). He and his wife were living with his daughter Laura and her husband Joseph Snyder; his son Harry Fox was also living with them (19).
He died on 11 February 1923, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3, 7). He was buried in Westminster Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (7, 23).
