I suspect the Henry Gorgas in the 1850 census with Rachel Gorgas (1850 US census, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Spring Garden, ward 3, precinct 1, microfilm series M432, film 818, page 455 = 911 handwritten) is the Henry Gorgas, wood corder, in the 1850 and 1855 city directories. He is too old to be the Henry who served in the 91st (27 in 1850).
Two other Henry Gorgas's, born about the right time, lived near Philadelphia. I have preferred the one recorded below because his occupation in 1860 and 1870 matches the occupation listed in the descriptive book.
One lived from 9 April 1843 to 4 July 1931, in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. In 1850, he was living in Lower Salford Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, with Abraham, Elizabeth and Phebe [1850 US census, Pennsylvania, Montgomery, Lower Salford, page 25 = 49 handwritten]. In 1870, he was living in Upper Dalford Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania [1870 US census, Pennsylvania, Montgomery, Upper Dalford Township, post office Schwenks Ville, microfilm series M593, film 1379, page 384 = 3 handwritten]. In 1880, he was living in Hatfield Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania [1880 US census, Pennsylvania, Montgomery County, Hatfield Township, supervisor's district 4, enumeration district 8, microfilm series T9, film 1157, page 154 = 14 B handwritten]. In 1900, he was living in Franconia Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania [1900 US census, Pennsylvania, Montgomery County, Franconia Township, supervisor's district 2, enumeration district 202, microfilm series T623, film 1442, page 173 = 6B handwritten]. He died on 4 July 1931, and was buried in the Lower Salford Mennonite Cemetery, Harleysville, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania [Find-a grave, memorial 58155012 (accessed 27 February 2011]. [Numerous gedcom's are available on RootsWeb WorldConnect, under the name Henry P Garges or Henry Price Garges. Some seem to me, on quick examination only, to be conflating this Henry with the Bucks County Henry. Perhaps I have not correctly assigned records to each.]
The other lived in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. In 1850, Henry Gargas, 19 years old, a farmer, was living in Warwick, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, with Abraham and Leah Gargas (presumably his parents), and with Lewis, Sarah Ann, Prescilla, Emma, and Eve (presumably his siblings) [1850 US census, Pennsylvania, Bucks County, Warwick Township, page 123 = 246 handwritten]. In 1860, he is probably the Henry Garras [sic] living in Doylestown, with Abraham and Lacy [?], Presilla, Emma, and a farm hand (1860 US census, Pennsylvania, Bucks County, Doylestown Township, microfilm series M653, film 1084, page 274 = 114 handwritten). In 1870, he was living in Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, with Mary (presumably his wife), Annie, Edward, and Isaac (presumably their children) and others In 1880, he was living in Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, with Mary, Annie, Edward Isaac, and others [microfilm series T9, film 1106, page 196 C]. In 1900, he was living in Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, with Mary (page 194 = 12 A handwritten).
He was born in 1841/42 (6 (19 in 1861), 9 [19 in 1860], 10 [28 in 1870], 15 [7 in 1850]). He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (6, 9, 10, 15).
In 1850, he was living in ward 3, Spring Garden, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). He was living with Edward and Susan Gorgas (presumably his parents), and with Mary, Theodore, and Harriet Gorgas (presumably siblings), along with John A Gorgas and Rosanna Spider (15). He had attended school within the year (15).
In 1860, he was living in ward 20, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with Ed. Gorgas (presumably his father), and with Emma, Mary, Theodore, Harriet, William, and Elizabeth Gorgas (presumably siblings) (9). He was a coach trimmer (9). They were probably living at 1413 Marshall (11).
When he enlisted, he was a carriage trimmer (6).
When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7-1/2 inches tall, and had a light complexion, hazel eyes, and light hair (6).
He enlisted and was mustered into service on 23 August 1861 (1, 6). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania, by Captain Starr (6). He was a private in company A (1, 16, 17, 18).
He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (8).
He was missing in action on 2 July 1863 (5). He was wounded on 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (1).
On 9 July 1863, he was dropped from the rolls, by order of Brigadier General Garrard (5, 6). On 28 July 1863, he was reported as having been dropped because he was missing in the campaign (3).
On 8 September 1863, Sinex reported that he was in Philadelphia and able to rejoin the regiment, and requested his return (2).
On 3 November 1863, he was reported regained from missing in action and under arrest (4).
[Bates does not list him as a veteran.]
He was reported returned from absent without leave on 21 April 1864 (7).
He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1). He was a private, in company A (16, 17, 18).
He is probably the Henry Gorgas whose daughter Annie Gorgas died on 14 September 1868, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). Her mother was Elisabeth Fuchs (12). She died at, or was buried from, 1304 Charlotte Street (12). She died of congestion of brain (12). She was buried at St Peters Ground, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12).
From 1868 through 1870, he was a coachtrimmer, living at 1304 Charlotte Street (11).
In 1870, he was living in ward 17, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with Lizzie (presumably his wife), and Mary (presumably their daughter), along with two other people (10). He was a coach painter (10).
From 1871 to 1874, he was living at 1304 Charlotte, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). He was a trimmer (11).
He may be the Henry C Gorgas who died on 8 February 1872, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). He died at, or was buried from, the corner of 16th and Filbert Streets, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (14). He died of consumption (14). This Henry was buried at Oddfellows Cemetery (14).
In 1878, Elizabeth, widow of Harry Gorgas, was living at 406 Eisen Avenue (11). This is presumably his widow.
His widow is probably the Elisabeth Fox Gargas who died on 29 July 1883, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (12). She died at, or was buried from, 1449 North 4th Street (12). She died of phthisis pulmonalis (12). She was buried at St Peters Cemetery (12).
