He died on 9 July 1880, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of inanition (4, 5). He was married then (5). He was a laborer (5). He lived at, or died at, 1905 Dean Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5). He was buried on 11 July 1880, in the Philanthropic Vault (5).

On 21 October 1881, his widow, Isabella Gorman, successfully applied for a pension (4, 6).

A letter from Sinex to Marvin on 22 August 1863 refers to a James Gorman, company D, who is probably the other John Gorman.
