91st PA: William Haines

William Haines

Before the war

On 7 April 1836, he was born, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Haberkuch (or Habakuk) Haines and Charlotte Flett or Blackwood. [sources: date: 11; 3 (24 in 1861), 12 (15 in 1850), 13 (25 in 1860), 14 (33 in 1870), 15 (43 in 1880). place: 3, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15. parents: 11 (Flett), 12, 24 (Blackwood)]

In 1850, he was living in Lower Dublin, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Haberkuch [?] and Charlotte Haines (presumably his parents), along with others (presumably siblings). He had attended school within the year. [source: 12]

He married Louisa Smith. She was born on 31 March 1838 [?], in Pennsylvania, to Charles F Smith and Rebecca Beason. They apparently had at least these children:

[sources: 13, 14, 15 (Mar 37), 16, 17 (8 children, 6 living, in 1910), 18, 19 (31 Mar 38)]

In 1860, he was living in ward 12, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Louisa, their son Charles, and with Joseph (apparently his brother) and Joseph's family. He was a carriage painter, and owned $500 in personal property. [source: 13]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, brown eyes, and brown hair. He was freckled. [source: 3]

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 13 September 1861. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Starr. He was a private in company C. [sources: 1, 3, 4, 5, 25]

He was discharged at Frederic City, Maryland, on 13 January 1863 or 15 January 1865 on surgeon's certificate of disability. (Given the location of the entry in the discharge register, 1863 seems more likely than 1865.) He was a private, in company C. [sources: 1 (1865), 2 (1863), 4 (1863, Alexandria VA), 5 (1865), 25]

After the war

On 29 April 1862, his (apparent) son William Ellsworth died, at 741 Plover Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 4 May 1862, he was buried, in Union Cemetery. [source: 23]

In 1870, he was living in ward 14, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Louisa, and their children Charles, Ameline, William L, and Ella L. He was a house painter. [source: 14]

In 1880, he was living at 1237 Wood Street, ward 14, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Louisa, their children Charles, Emeline, William Ellie, Louisa, Samuel, and Richard, and his aunt Sarah Fleet and nephew George Groves. [source: 15]

In 1890, he was living at 1004 Sergeant Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a painter. [sources: 5, 6]

He apparently continued to live on Sergeant street, and to be a painter, until about 1893. He then seems to have lived at 212 North 10th Street (1894), 224 NOrth 10th Street (1896), 236 North 11th Street (1898), and 310 North 11th Street (1900). [source: 22]

On 5 November 1891, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 7, 8]

In 1900, he seems not to have been living with his wife. She was living at 2152 Marston [?] Street, ward 32, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was living with her daughter Louisa and Louisa's family, and with her sons Samuel and Richard. [source: 16]

He had apparently moved in with his wife and their daughter Louisa and her family by about 1905. He was living at 1840 North 27th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He continued to be a painter. [source: 22]

He applied again for a pension on 19 February 1907. [source: 8]

On 5 April 1909, he died, at 1840 North 27th Street, ward 29, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of paralysis, with dropsy attending hypertrophy of the heart contributing. He was a painter. On 8 April 1909, he was buried, from his late residence, 1840 N 27th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in Fernwood Cemetery, Fernwood, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 8, 9, 10, 11]

On 16 April 1909, his widow, Louisa Haines, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension. [sources: 7, 8]

In 1910, his widow, Louisa Haines, was living at 1811 Twenty Seventh street, ward 32 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was living with her daughter Louisa and Louisa's family, and with her son Richard. [source: 17]

On 20 February 1915, his widow, Louisa Haines, died, at 1811 North 27th Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (her residence). She died of apoplexy, with interstitial nephritis contributing. On 23 February 1915, she was buried, in Fernwood Cemetery, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. [sources: 19, 20, 21]

1900 US census
William Haines, born Feb 1835, PA, painter, widowed, married 40 years, parents born PA, is living at 310 Ellsworth Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ward 14, e.d. 234, page 8 = 8 A handwritten (FamilySearch)
he is living with his sister Sarah Myers, born May 1864
He may be my William, but the date doesn't match exactly, the parents are supposedly born in Pennsylvania and not New Jersey, and Sarah born 1864 is in neither the 1850 census nor the 1860 census (Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, ward 23, precinct 10, microfilm series M653, film 1174, pages 925 = 37 handwritten to 926 = 38 handwritten [FamilySearch])
