When he enlisted, he was 6 feet tall, and had blue eyes, dark hair, and a light complexion. [sources: 2-3]

During the war

On 6 September 1862, he enlisted, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was enlisted by J A Gregory. He was a private, in company A. Acting Assistant Surgeon J K Mason certified that he was physically able to serve as a soldier noting that he had had a head injury, and had had small pox. He was paid a bounty of $25, and a premium of $4. [sources: 1, 2 (co. H), 3 (co. A)]

He is listed on a Muster and descriptive roll of a detachment of US volunteers forwarded for the 91 regiment Pennsylvania infantry, dated 12 September 1862, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. But he is not on the muster rolls of any company of the regiment. [source: 2]
