Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (5, 7, 8). He was born in 1818/19 (5 (43 in 1862), 7 [47 in 1860], 8 [58 at death in 1868]).

In 1860, he was living in ward 1, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with Fanny (presumably his wife), and Charles, Alfred, Edward, Joseph, Mary, John, and George (presumably their children) (7). He was a dealer, and owned $3,000 in real estate and $500 in personal property (7).

When he enlisted, he was a tailor [?] (5).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, gray eyes, and gray hair (5).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 3 September 1862 (1, 5). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Gregory (5). He was a private in company F (1, 10, 11).

He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg (6).

On 6 November 1863, he was returned to duty from the ambulance corps (2).

He was discharged at camp near Paoli Mills, Virginia, on 24 November 1863 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 3, 4, 5). He was a private, in company F (10, 11).

After the war

On 26 January 1868, he died, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, of supposed disease of the heart (8, 9). He died at, or was buried from, 742 South Sixth Street, 4th ward, which was his son-in-law's house (James J Ashmen) (8, 9). He was a core maker (8). He was married (8). On 30 January 1868, he was buried at Lafayette Cemetery (8). Members of Paschal Iron Works Beneficial Society were invited to attend the funeral (9).
