Valentine Houseworth

Before the war

He was born on 17 August 1842 (10, 13; 4 (21 in 1863), 7 [17 in 1860], 8 [27 in 1870], 9 [35 in 1880], 10 [57 in 1900], 11 [68 in 1910], 14 [8 in 1850]). He was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania (4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14). He was born to John Jacob Hauswirth and Margaret Shaffer (13).

In 1850, he was living in Nackamixon [?] Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with his parents John and Margaret (14). He had attended school within the year (14).

In 1860, he was living in Bridgeton District, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (7). He was living with John and Margaret Houseworth, and with Hannah, Lucinda, Jacob, Margaret, and Anne Houseworth (presumably his siblings) (7).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 5-1/2 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair (4).

During the war

He was drafted (1, 3, 4). He enlisted and was mustered into service in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry on 22 July 1863 (1, 3, 4, 5). He enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4). His service was credited to the Fifth Congressional District (4). He was a private in company K of the 118th Pennsylvania (3, 4, 16).

On 2 June 1865, he was transferred from company K of the 118th Pennsylvania (1, 3, 4). He was a private in company G of the 91st Pennsylvania (1, 16).

On 3 July 1865, he was promoted [probably to corporal], effective 1 July 1865 (2).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 5). He was a corporal in company G (16).

After the war

In 1865/67, he married Mary [unknown family name] (10, 11). In 1900 and 1910, she had had ten children, eight of whom were alive (10, 11).

In 1870, he was living in Bridgeton District, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (8). He was living with his wife Mary and children Emma and Charlotte (8). His occupation was boating on the canal (8). He owned $250 in real estate and $675 in personal property (8).

In 1880, he was living in Bridgeton Election District, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (9). He was living with his wife Mary, and children Emma, Lotta, Maggie, Liveria, and Valentine (9). He was a boatman, and had been unemployed four months in the previous year (9).

In 1890, he was living in Bridgeton, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (post office Upper Black Eddy) (5).

On 8 March 1892, he successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 15).

In 1900, he was living in Bridgeton Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (10). He was living with his wife Emma, and children Emma, Valentine, George, Harry, and Nellie (10). He was a farmer (10).

On 18 February 1907, he again applied for a pension (15).

In 1910, he was living in Bridgeton Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with his wife Mary, and children Emma and Harry (11). He was farming, on a home farm (11).

He died on 3 September 1912, at Upper Black Eddy, [Bucks County,] Pennsylvania (13 [1921], 15 [1912]).

On 21 October 1912, his widow, Mary Houseworth, successfully applied from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 15).

In 1920, his widow Mary was living in Bridgeton, Bucks County, Pennsylvania (12). She was living with her children Harry and Emma, and Harry's family (12).
