91st PA: John Jamison

John Jamison

Before the war

He was born in 1816/17 (9 (44 in 1861)). He was born in Ayrshire, Scotland (9).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair (9).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 5 November 1861 (1, 9). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by C L Zinn (?) (9). He was mustered in as a private in company H (1, 11, 12). He had rifle number 28 (9).

Because of disability, he was transferred on 1 July 1863 to the Veterans' reserve corps (1, 5, 8, 9). He was a private, in company H (11, 12).

According to a letter written by Colonel Gregory, "J Jamison" began working as Gregory's hostler on 23 September 1863, and was still his hostler on 29 September 1863 (2). "J Jamison" was detailed as Gregory's servant on 28 September 1863 (4, 6). Gregory later claims that "James Jameson" worked as his hostler from 29 September until 17 October (3). He had returned by 23 October 1863 (7). (Bates has no James Jameson.) Perhaps this was really David Jamison.

After the war

On 31 January 1891, his widow, Elizabeth Jamison, applied unsuccessfully from Canada for a pension (10, 13).
