Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 7 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, grey eyes, and sandy hair (2).

During the war

He was a substitute (1, 2). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 7 October 1864 (1, 2, 3, 9). He was enlisted for one year, at Monroe County, Pennsylvania (2). His service was credited to the Thirteenth Congressional District (2). He was mustered in as a private in company H (1, 12).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1, 3 [14 Jul], 9). He was a private, in company H (12).

After the war

In 1880, he was living in Madison Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania (4). He was living with his sister Emma and her family (4). He was a farmer (4). He was widowed or divorced (4). (Note that according to the 1910 census, his later marriage to Laura was his first marriage (4).)

In 1880 or 1881, he married Laura [unknown family name] (5, 10). In 1900 and 1910, she reported having had no children (5).

In 1890, he was living in Madison, Columbia County, Pennsylvania (post office Jerseytown) (3).

On 2 October 1890, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 9).

In 1900, he was living in Madison Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania (5). He was living with his wife Laura and (adopted?) son Paul (5). He was a farmer (5).

In 1910, he was living in Madison Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania (6). He was living with his wife Laura and (adopted?) son Paul (6). He had no occupation (6).

He died on 5 June 1916, at Jerseytown, [Columbia County,] Pennsylvania (9, 10). He was buried in the Jerseytown Cemetery, Jerseytown, Columbia County, Pennsylvania (10).

On 28 June 1916, his widow, Laura V Johnson, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (8, 9).

In 1920, his widow Laura was living in Madison Township, Columbia County, Pennsylvania (7). She was living very near his son Paul (7).

On 25 December 1942, his widow, Laura V Johnson, died (11). She was buried in Jerseytown Cemetery, Jerseytown, Columbia County, Pennsylvania (11).
