Before the war

He was born on 14 January 1820 (10; 4 (44 in 1864)). He was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania (4). He was born to Joseph J Johnson and Milla Perrin (10).

When he enlisted, he was a farmer (4).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6-1/2 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, gray eyes, and dark hair (4).

During the war

He was drafted from the sixteenth congressional district (1, 4). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 21 September 1864 (1, 4, 5). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (4). He was a private, in company F (1, 8, 9).

He was discharged near Washington DC by general order on 1 June 1865 (1, 3, 5 [31 May]). He was a private, in company F (8, 9).

After the war

He married Rachel A Hymes (10). They had at least these children (10):

On 7 March 1882, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 7).

In 1890, he was living in Elbinsville, Mann Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (5). His left leg had been affected (5).

On 22 February 1893, he died, at Elbinsville, Pennsylvania (7, 10). He was buried in Johnson Cemetery, Elbinsville, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (2 (Artemas Cem, Mann Twp), 10 [Johnson Cem]).

On 6 May 1893, his widow, Rachel A Johnson, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (6, 7).
