91st PA: Jacob B Kaeplinger (or Kepplinger)

Jacob B Kaeplinger (or Kepplinger)

Before the war

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3, 5, 11, 13, 14). He was born on 16 June 1843 (19; 3 (19 in 1862), 5 (19 in 1862), 11 [7 in 1850], 13 [25 in 1870], 14 [36 in 1880]).

In 1850, he was living in ward 1, Spring Garden, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (11). He was living with Christian and Elizabeth Keplinger (presumably his parents), and with Mary, Elizabeth, and Caroline (presumably his siblings) (11). He had attended school within the year (11).

When he enlisted, he was a confec[tioner] (5).

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 4 inches tall, and had a light complexion, brown eyes, and dark hair (3, 5).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 10 October 1862 (1, 3, 5). He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Lieutenant Gregory (3, 5). He was mustered in as a private in company K, by Lieutenant Justus Gregory (1, 3, 21, 22, 23).

On 23 February 1863, he returned to the regiment from duty at Windmill Point Hospital (2).

He was injured in the leg in May 1863 (7, 12 [wounded in ankle], 20 [ankle]).

On 30 April 1865, he was reported absent in hospital, wounded (10).

He was discharged at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 16 or 17 May 1865 by general order 68, War Department (1, 4 [17 May], 6). He was a private, in company K (21, 22, 23).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 1, Kansas City, Missouri (13). He was a cigar maker (13).

On 11 July 1874, he applied successfully for a pension (8, 9).

He married Caroline Harter, probably in 1874/1875 (15). They had three children (14, 15).

In 1880, he was living in Nether Providence Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with his wife Caroline, their children Willie, Laura, and Harry, and Caroline's parents and sister (14). He was a car inspector (14).

On 19 February 1882, he died (19). He was buried in Mt Moriah Cemetery, Yeadon, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (19). (However, Mt Moriah is not in Yeadon. Could it be Holy Cross, or Fernwood?)

On 28 [?] June 1887, his widow, Caroline M Kaepplinger, applied successfully for a pension (8, 9).

In 1900, his widow, Carrie Keplinger, was living in ward 24, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (15). She was living with her sister Emmaline and children Laura and Harry (15).

In 1910, his widow, Carrie M Kaepplinger, was living at 3411 Haverford Street, in ward 24, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (16). She was living with her children Laura and Harry, and her sister Emma (16).

In 1920, his widow, Caroline Kaepplinger, was living at 3405 Haverford Street, in ward 24, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (17). She was living with her daughter Laura (17).

In 1930, his widow, Caroline Kaepplinger, was living at 821 Connell Avenue, Yeadon Borough, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (18). She was living with her daughter Laura (18).
