Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 1-3/4 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, brown eyes, and dark hair. [source: 3]

During the war

He was a substitute. He enlisted and was mustered into service in the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry on 30 July 1863. He was enlisted for three years, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Captain Lehman. He was mustered in company I of the 118th Pennsylvania Infantry. [sources: 1, 2, 3, 16]

On 2 June 1865, he was transferred from the 118th Pennsylvania to the 91st Pennsylvania. He served as a private in company H of the 91st Pennsylvania. [sources: 1, 2, 16]

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865. He was a private in company H. [sources: 1, 16]

After the war

In 1870, he was living in ward 2, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his parents F J and Bertha, and with Charles and John, along with Augusta, Sarah, and John Wesley. [source: 15]

In 1870/71, he married Virginia [unknown family name]. She was born in August 1844, in Pennsylvania. They had two known children:

In 1910, he was living at 537 McKean Street, ward 39, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Virginia, with his brother Vitus and Vitus's wife Martha, and with Bertha and Naomi Stevens. He was a locksmith, in a shop, and had not been out of work in 1909. [source: 6]

In 1920, he was living at 1028 Pine Street, ward 2, Darby, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Virginia, in a household headed by Henry and Elizabeth Du Bosque. He was a locksmith at a door lock factory. [source: 7]

In 1930, he was living in the Odd Fellows' Home for the Aged, in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Virginia. He was retired. [source: 8]

On 21 September 1933, he died, in Lower Swatara Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. He died of cardio-renal disease, arteriosclerosis, and phlebitis (duration 1 week) with ulcers of the leg and foot. He was a locksmith.
