John A Kipe or Knipe

Before the war

He was born on 18 April 1838, in Frederick County, Maryland, to John Henry Kipe and Catharine Jane Clark (5, 6 [21 in 1860], 7 [32 in 1870], 9 [12 in 1850]). He was 26 years old when he enlisted in 1865 (2 (26 in 1865)). According to the regimental records, he was born in Adams County, Pennsylvania (2).

In 1850, he was living with his parents in Election District 5, Frederick County, Maryland (9). He had attended school within the year (9).

In 1860, he was living with his parents in Hanvers District, Frederick County, Maryland (6). He was a laborer (6). He had attended school within the year (6).

On 19 August 1860, he married Julian Ann McClain, in Waynesboro, Franklin County, Pennsylvania (5). They had seven children (5):

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, and had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, and sandy hair (2).

During the war

He was drafted (1). He enlisted and was mustered into service on 28 February 1865 (2) or (less probably) 28 February 1864 (1). He was enlisted for one year, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, by Captain Eyster (2). His enlistment was credited to the sixteenth congressional district (2). He was a private in company A (1, 12).

He mustered out with his company on 10 July 1865 (1). He was a private, in company A (12).

After the war

In 1869, he testified supporting Maria Shriner's pension application (11).

In 1870, he was living in Emmitsburg District, Frederick County, Maryland (7). He was a day laborer, and opened $400 in real property and $125 in personal property (7). He was living with his wife Julia, and their children Emma, Catherine, John, and Robert (7).

He died on 5 March 1878, in Sabillasville, Frederick County, Maryland (5). He was buried in the Otterbein Chapel United Brethren Cemetery, Sabillasville, Frederick County, Maryland (5).

In 1880, his widow was living with her mother in Hanvers District, Frederick County, Maryland (8). She was living with their children John, Peter, E Mary, and E Anna (8).

On 8 August 1889, his widow, Julia A Kipe, applied successfully from Maryland for a pension (3, 4).

In 1890, his widow, Anna Kipe, was living in Hanvers, Frederick County, Maryland (10).
