Martin Knittle

Before the war

He was born in November 1840, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, perhaps to David Knittle and Agnes [unknown family name]. In 1850, he was living in ward 5, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was living with David and Agnes Nettle (presumably his parents), and with John, Wilhelm, and Joseph (presumably his siblings). He had attended school within the year. [source: 15]

In 1860, he was living in West Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was living with David and Agnes Knittle (presumably his parents), and with John, Joseph, and Sebastian Knittle (presumably siblings). He was a heaver [?] up rolls [?], perhaps for his father, who was a blacksmith. [source: 13]

When he enlisted, he was a roller. [source: 4]

Description

When he enlisted, he was 5 feet 6 inches tall, and had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and sandy hair. [sources: 4, 5]

During the war

He was drafted. He enlisted and was mustered into service on 10 July 1863 in the 62nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He enlisted for three years. His service was credited to the 22nd congressional district. [sources: 1, 4, 5, 6 (7 Jul)]

He was transferred on 20 July 1864 from company L of the 62nd Pennsylvania to the 91st. On 21 July 1864, he, and the other members of companies L and M, were assigned to company G. On 22 July 1864, they were transferred to company K, following brigade orders to assign them to the smallest company. He was then absent, as a private. He was a private in company K. He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company. He was a private, in company K. [sources: 1, 6, 16, 17, 18]

After the war

In Feb 1870, he married Frances [Bicohel (??)]. She was born in July 1844, in Switzerland. She immigrated in 1857. She had no children. They had one known adopted daughter:

In 1870, he was living in West Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was living with his wife Francis. He was a nobler, and owned $100 in personal property. [source: 14]

In 1880, he was living on Fulton Street, in ward 35, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was a knobler [?]. He was living with his wife Frances and nephew George Knittle. [source: 8]

On 6 January 1882, he applied successfully for a pension. [source: 11]

In 1890, he was living on Fingal Street, in the 35th ward of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He had been shot in the left thigh. [source: 6]

In 1900, he was living on Fingal Street, in ward 35, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was apparently not working. He was living with his wife Frances, adopted daughter Rose, mother-in-law Anne Bicohel [?] and brother-in-law John Bicohel. [source: 9]

In 1910, he was living at 347 Fengal Street, in ward 19, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He was retired. He was living with his wife Francis. [source: 10]

He died on 5 July 1911. He was buried at St. Martin's, in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. [source: 7, 11 (5 Oct)]

On 12 October 1911, his widow applied successfully for a pension. [source: 11]

In 1920, his widow, Frances Knittel, was living at 346 Frugal Street, ward 19, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. [source: 12]
